Tombstone, AZ

Tombstone was the last stop on our whirlwind tour of the Southwest. We made it into town just before sunset - any later and the whole thing would have been a wash. We arrived just in time to watch as the setting sun cast its final amber hues against this well-preserved old-west town.

The O.K. Corral on Allen St.- Probably the most visited part of Tombstone, famous for its historic shootout between the Clantons and Earps. To be accurate: Wyatt Earp, Morgan Earp, Virgil Earp, and Doc Holliday vs. Ike Clanton, Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury, and Tom McLaury.

"On Oct. 27, Curly Bill accidentally killed Tombstone marshal Fred White. Although Ike and Billy Clanton were not present when this shooting took place, this event is still said to have started the bitter feud between the Earps and the cowboys. Before Marshal White died a few days later, he admitted that it was in fact an accident. Curly Bill was allegedly killed by a revengeful filled Wyatt Earp in Iron Springs, now Mescal Springs, Arizona in 1882." - from the website clantongang.com

Night came and we ducked into Big Nose Kate's Saloon for dinner and a few brews. The saloon’s ambiance was drenched with “essence of West” - the “vigilante justice” stained glass, bull’s head, a flirtatious waitress in full period costume, and last but not least, the blue-jeaned-boot-scoot-boogie entertainment. Parker ordered a sarsaparilla.

Allen street as it may have appeared 100 years ago - lit by gas lamps and a full moon. The street, obviously, would not have been paved though.

This marks the end of our road trip. That night we drove as far as we could into Texas, took a nap at a rest stop, and finished the drive to Houston in the morning.
